I have been reading a lot about "chains" lately. These little procedures that children start to think must occur in a certian way whenever they happen. If the chain is not followed, its frustrating at the least and can result in a full-blown melt-down at the worst. Most of what I've been reading is related to autism but it still fits when it comes to Mikey and I've been thinking a lot about this and trying to allow for it as well as slowly change some of the chains that have become issues for us.
There are times though when you see certain chains that make you giggle a bit. For example, this past week, Mikey went to watch the TV downstairs and for some reason the little green light that is right by the power button wasn't working (nor is the red one when you turn it off so it must be burnt out in general). So Mikey went through his whole chain of getting out a movie, putting it in the DVD player, getting the TV on and setting everything up for where he was going to sit (after putting his drink over on the other side of the room where it apparently belongs). Then he sat down and realized that little green light wasn't on. So he turned it off, went through the whole process again and still no green light! For the next hour he had to inform me that the light was broke and never once would he actually sit down and watch his movie. Fortunately the next day the light had been knocked out of the chain and he is once again enjoying the TV down there even if the light isn't working ;).
