This is one of my favorite "disability" stories. I saw one interview once were Dick (the father) explained their partnership as Rick being the heart and himself being the body and that they needed both parts to do this. Amazing doesn't even describe these two.

I know the Hoyts. You know the Massachusetts thing. It's a small SPED world. They are, for lack of a better term, bad ass. Rick and Dick presented to my school twice. Each time Rick took time out to hang with my students and especially to bond and motivate my AAC users. I had one student who LOVED Rick and vocalized through out his speech and then asked him about how he learned to read (his mom traced letters on his body for him to teach him letters). After that all I ever had to say to motivate that student was, "Rick Hoyt always did HIS reading work!"

Oh Kate how great that you know the Hoyts and that you have been able to have Rick in your classroom. What a motivator for your students and for your staff I'm sure. As a mother to a child with special needs I'm hold Dick up as a model of being the parent that helps your child achieve all of his/her dreams. Two very amazing men and a reminder of how deep we can dig into our souls in order to achieve our dreams.
